The Tennessee Center for Nursing's Story
Originally organized in 1996 as the Tennessee Healthcare Consortium for Nursing (THCN), the Center is a result of the Colleagues in Caring grant, an initiative funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as a regional collaborative for nursing workforce development. Funding for THCN was provided through a variety of sources, including generous donations, a grant from BlueCross BlueShield Community Trust, and a contract with the Tennessee Board of Nursing.
In August 2000, THCN was organized as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and Dr. Nancy B. Moody was hired as the first Executive Director with offices located on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In the spring of 2001, THCN was transformed into the Tennessee Center for Nursing, and later began operating temporarily through Lincoln Memorial University. A fulltime Executive Director, Ann P. Duncan, MPH, RN, was hired in June 2002 as the TCN offices were moved from Knoxville to Nashville. After seven years of exemplary leadership, Ann Duncan retired in June 2009 entrusting long time associate and Director of Research, Lois Wagner, PhD, APRN-BC, to the position of Executive Director. In June 2010 the Tennessee Board of Nursing made the decision to not renew our grant funding for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. On December 31, 2010 our office was closed and our organization became a volunteer driven organization headed by our Board President, Chris Clarke of the Tennessee Hospital Association.
