1. What are the diffent types of nurses?

There are only three types of nurses specifically educated and trained to provide nursing care. They are classified as either a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), or Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) which includes Nurse Practitioner (NP), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).

More information regarding each career is available on the TCN Careers page.

2. Where can I find information about a career in nursing?

There are several good websites on our "How to Become a Nurse" page. The following are also great websites with more information:

3. Who should I contact about nursing licensure information?

The Tennessee Board of Nursing is responsible for the licensure, education and practice of nurses in Tennessee. Their website can be viewed at http://health.state.tn.us/boards/nursing/index.htm or they can be reached by phone at (615) 532-3202 or write:

Tennessee Board of Nursing
227 French Landing, Suite 300
Nashville, TN 37243

4. How do I transfer my nursing license to Tennessee if I am currently working as a nurse in another state/country?

Tennessee is part of the Nuse Licensure Compact Agreement that allows for the mutual recognition of nurses licensed by participating states. The Tennessee General Assembly enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2002. As of July 1, 2008, the following states belong to this mutual recognition model of multistate nursing regulation: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. Nurses who reside in other compact states who hold a multistate license “have the “multistate privilege” to practice in Tennessee without the requirement for a license issued by the Tennessee Board of Nursing. For more information on compact law visit the TN Board of Nursing webite at http://health.state.tn.us/boards/nursing/index.htm or they can be reached by phone at (615) 532-3202.
