What is GEM-NURSING?
Description and Background
The Women’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor and the Tennessee Economic Council on Women have an exciting national demonstration project that links students, ages 15-21, with mentors in nursing occupations via a website, email and special events. Group Electronic Mentoring in Nursing (GEM-Nursing) encourages students to pursue nursing careers through innovation group e-mentoring. The project began as a pilot in the Women’s Bureau Chicago regional office in 2002 as Group Electronic Mentoring in Healthcare Services (GEM-HS) with students and mentors in Illinois and Michigan. The Women's Bureau has asked the Tennessee Economic Council on Women (TECW) to lead the GEM-Nursing project in Tennessee and TECW is currently seeking nurse professionals and health care organizations to participate in the project as mentors and/or collaborative partners.

The Tennessee Economic Council on Women was created by the state legislature in 1998 to serve as an economic advocate for women throughout Tennessee on issues that include education, career development and job training opportunities, among others. In 2002, the Council began a statewide career mentoring campaign to prepare girls and women with the skills and knowledge to pursue high paying, high demand jobs, including those in healthcare. In addition to the e-nursing project, the Council heads a healthcare career campaign in Warren County that includes a speakers' bureau, healthcare entrepreneur conference, nursing club and job shadowing opportunities.

Purpose
Recent studies suggest that hospitals and other health care providers in many areas of the country are experiencing difficulty in recruiting registered nurses. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the demand for registered nurses will increase by 26% between now and 2010 and an additional 443,000 replacement positions available. The Women's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor is addressing this crisis with GEM-Nursing, which will raise awareness in young people of education and career opportunities and the benefits of working in nursing fields and provide tools and encouragement to students and communities to address the workforce shortage in these fields. The Women's Bureau has asked the Tennessee Economic Council on Women to lead the GEM-Nursing project in Tennessee.
Daily Digest
The GEM-Nursing listserv sends a Daily Digest to participating students and mentors who exchange ideas on a variety of topics. It enables students to ask educational and career development questions about nursing and allied health, and receive answers from vast numbers of nursing professionals who volunteer as GEM-Nursing mentors. Topics include:
  • Education and careers in nursing
  • Benefits of working in nursing careers
  • Challenges and concerns about nursing careers
  • Future opportunities in nursing careers
  • Current issues relating to nursing fields
Mentors
Mentors will be volunteer nursing professionals working in a variety of fields and venues.
Website
A website will be created to provide biographical information about the mentors, highlight careers, provide scholarship and financial aid information, quiz activities to strengthen students' knowledge about nursing career choices, and an archive of the Daily Digests.
Partners
The demonstration project will involve many local partners throughout the nation ranging from after-school groups, nursing associations, universities, public and private schools, and community-based/faith-based organizations to government sponsored programs such as Job Corps Centers and HUD's Neighborhood Network Centers.
