Recruitment & Retention
In light of the critical nursing shortage and the rapid changes in health care, there is a vast amount of valuable information being written. In order to assist you in indentifying material that may be pertinent to your needs, the Tennessee Center for Nursing is pleased to provide our research and reports on recruitment and retention of the nursing workforce.

Transition to Workforce Study (2008)
Currently, TCN is collecting information on a Transition to Workforce study.  This  5-year longitudinal cohort study is tracking the characteristics, attitudes, workforce, and educational mobility of newly licensed RNs in Tennessee in their first five years of practice.  The study includes all new RNs licensed by exam between June 15, 2005 and June 12, 2006.  The Baseline and 1-year follow-up data have been collected.  The 2 year follow-up survey collection is underway.  Future surveys will be collected at three and five years. 

Recruitment of African Americans (2003)

Minority groups in the United States constitute 25% of the population with approximately 12% African American. By the year 2015, one third of the nation will be ethnically and culturally diverse, with African Americans expected to increase to 20%. Yet, African American student enrollment in baccalaureate nursing programs has experienced a precipitous drop over the past 20 years. CLICK HERE to download the complete .pdf report.

Recruitment & Retention of Nurses (2001)


Retention of current staff and recruitment of new staff is a primary concern for nurse executives throughout the country. This shortage is believed to be different from previous nursing shortages because of the driving forces: an aging workforce, an aging population, a decrease in cohort size, and a decrease in nursing school enrollment. Recruitment & Retention Funded Projects

The Tennessee Center for Nursing believes that to resolve the nursing shortage in our state we must improve the rentention of existing nurses in healthcare work settings and promote targeted recruitment into nursing. The quality of care delivered is dependent on the skills and knowledge of care providers. The loss of experienced nurses results in a loss of essential skills and knowledge. In order to improve retention of nurses, the Center has helped coordinate the following Projects:

Tennessee Nurse Manager Leadership Institute ('09)

The Nurse Managers Leadership Institute was designed to equip nurse leaders with the skills to improve unit performance, regain the organization's highest performers and advance patient care excellence. Originally held in 2009, this three-day course was presented by the Tennessee Nursing Partners Collaborative. A second Nurse Manager Leadership Institute is currently being planned for 2011. Tennessee Leadership Institute for Nursing Excellence ('05-'09) In 2005, the Center partnered with the University of Tennessee College of Nursing to create an annual professional development program designed to recognize excellence, endorse advancement, and encourage retention of registered nurses. This program was called the Tennessee Leadership Institute for Nursing Excellence (T-LINE). Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, this program lost it's funding in 2009. Facutly Institute for Nursing Excellence ('06-'09) Following the success of the T-line, the Center collaborated with the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing to create another annual development program designed to support leadership growth and educational excellence in nursin faculty. This program was called the Faculty Institute for Nursing Excellence (FINE). Again, due to budget cuts, this program lost it's funding in 2009.
